Question: Who Makes The Worst Ladies Undergarmets?

31 Aug

Answer: Victoria’s Secret

I am so done with that company.  Their garmets are crap.  Crap I tell you!

They always get me, too.  Everything always fits so lovely in the dressing room and you’re thinking “well, damn, I look pretty good”.

Then you get home and after a couple hours the dumb bra has shifted so much, the girls are half-in-half-out, and the back-clasp is practically a necklace.

Ugh!  So frustrated.  Nine months ago, I SWORE off Vicky!  I marched over to Macy’s and spent some pretty pennies (shout out to My Pretty Pennies, ha ha) on two very, very nice bras.  They have served me VERY well over 9 months and actually are still like new.

But, ohhhh NO.  Victorias’s Secret just HAD to send me a $10 gift card thingy for my birthday.  And there just happened to be a bra in my size in the discount box for $22.  You do the math.  I’ll tell you what it equals.  It equals me sitting here $12 dollars poorer with a bra around my neck.

Annoyed!

Let’s Celebrate Like It’s 1983!

28 Aug

I have finally emerged from my cocoon of flashcards, CPA books, notebooks, post-it notes, and CPA exam software and returned to the real world!  On Wednesday, I did nothing but sit in my living room and study.  ALL. DAY. LONG.  From about 9AM to 9PM.  Which inevitably turned into a night of insomnia fits.  I took the 2nd part of the CPA Exam yesterday and let me tell you – it was the hardest 4 hours and 15 minutes of my life thus far.  There were several points during the test where I either 1) was on the verge of tears or 2) laughed out loud.  The latter resulted in many glares at the Prometric testing center.  But alas, I made it through and am now just hoping for a pass when the results are posted on September 21st.

Just think, that was only the 2nd of four tests! I get to start studying for the next one on Tuesday!

Until then, it’s all fun and relaxation!  After all it IS my birthday this weekend!

Here’s what’s going on this weekend:

FRIDAY

  • Birthday party with all my friends at a really fun bar.  Can’t wait!

SATURDAY

  • Massage
  • Pool!
  • Birthday dinner with Lloyd at one of my favorite restaurants!  Actually, I just love their dessert, I could care less about the main course.  Ha!
  • Maybe comedy club?  Not sure about this because I just found out those place are pricey!

SUNDAY

  • Relax more!

MONDAY

  • My actual birthday!  No work on Monday!  Woohoo!
  • SHOPPING!!!!!
  • Birthday presents from Lloyd. 🙂  I wonder what he got me?

Thank you all SO much for your words of encouragement on twitter!  I was so overwhelmed about how many of you actually remembered my test and wished me good luck! 🙂  I think all your good luck vibes really helped!

Have a fabulous weekend!

How Paying More Now Saves You Later

Chi Straightener

Hell-O Lover.

You are looking at the best $109 I’ve ever spent on beautying myself: The Chi Straightener.

$109 for a straightener?  Yes, yes, yes.  And it’s budget-friendly, too.

I used to get the cheap-o straighteners at Target for ~$30.  I always had to replace them at least every 6 months (but more like 4-5).

However, my last Chi lasted me 2 1/2 years and still worked fabulous except for when, um, sparks started flying out of the cord (R.I.P. , friend.).  I would have plucked down $109 without a second thought had my mom not just bought me a new one for my birthday coming up (thanks, Mom!).

Now, let’s do some math!

So for 2 1/2 years that would be 5 cheap straighteners…

30 X 5 = $150

$109 < $150

So it may seem like a better deal when you pay $30 at the time instead of $109, but it’s really not.  Not only is it cheaper in the long run, but it works fabulously.  No more yanking on hair only to end up with frizzy, crazy lady hair like you do with the Target straighteners.

Case closed!

How Do You Study?

20 Aug

I am taking the Auditing and Attestation part of the CPA exam next Thursday.  If you had bumped into me at all this summer, I probably had my nose in a Wiley’s 2009 AUD book…and when you I think of summer, this isn’t the type of thing I normally picture.  The things we do for our career!

I feel really unprepared.  If you ever take the CPA exam, avoid Wiley at all costs!  I used Becker materials for the first part of the exam and felt really prepared even though they were out of date.  I definitely plan to go back to Becker for the last two parts of the tests.

I am unbelievably ready to be done with the CPA exam.  I want my life back.  I know it was my decision to take this test and that it’s going to make my career that much better, but anyone who’s ever taken it, knows that it’s like a prison.  You wake up thinking about auditor reports.  You get irritated when people ask you to do things, go places, have fun, because you can’t.  Because you have to study.  You leave work for the day only to go home and….work, study, read, learn.  I have a new found respect for people who work and go to school at the same time.  It’s tough!

I’ve been meaning to write up a blog post about my study habits because I know there are some CPA-ers out there reading.  To those readers, what are your study habits like?  What works for you?

For anyone who is in their Master’s Program, taking another certification exam, or just going to school on the side – how do you study?  I’m interested in knowing everyone’s tips!  Feel free to share them here and I’ll try to write up an inclusive blog post of everyone’s tips.

Until then, 7 days and counting.  Send good vibes!

Confession: I’ve Never Owned A Computer

13 Aug

I’m typing this post on a craptastic Dell circa 1990 (probably) courtesy of my generous dad.

Good ‘ole dad provided me a beater computer back in college, too.

See a trend here?

All that matters, I suppose, is that both computers that he’s given to me have always powered up and gotten the job done…albeit very slowly.

There is one other computer in my life…Lloyd’s iMac.  SO dreamy!  Those things are amazing!  I was always a PC until I met Lloyd…he turned me to a Mac!  Of course, Lloyd always reminds me that it’s his and he can use it just whenever he wants – including when I’m using it.  😉

So, I’m starting to get fed up with not really having a computer of my own and the general crappiness of my dad’s hand-me-down computers (sorry, Dad).

I want my own, dammit!

I really want one of these:

Oooooo, Ahhhhh

Oooooo, Ahhhhh

But, I just can’t justify over a grand for a computer right now.  (Some day we’ll be together MacBook.)

So, as a reward for suffering through the death of my social life (AKA The CPA Exam), after I pass, I’m going to buy myself a new laptop.

That’s where you readers come in.  Which brand do you like? What should I look for? Or look out for? I’d like to spend less than $500 – is that possible?

I can’t believe that I might actually become a computer owner at the ripe old age of 26!

Let Your Budget Take A Personal Day

12 Aug

wake-up-happy

Monday was one of those days where I woke up and my first thought was:

“Not gonna happen.”

Even though I finished up the night before with a killer cocktail of a fish-oil pill, a multivitamin, a good layer of night cream, some yoga poses, and a nice glass of water (the “grown-up martini“), I woke up feeling ready to knock on death’s door.

I wasn’t sick, but my body and my brain needed a break.

Ya know what I mean?  I knew I had to call in just take the day to recharge, so that’s just what I did.  Recharged.

So if we all know our body needs a little recharging every now and then, shouldn’t the same principle go for all aspects of our life – sexy budget included?

Not convincing enough?  How’s this – Lloyd and I see each other a lot.  Maybe too much.  Sometimes I think we might take each other for granted…

But, last weekend, he was out of town all weekend for a bachelor party (third this summer!) and by the time he got back, it was like first love all over again.  Our eyes met on Sunday afternoon and we were like star-crossed lovers, it was like our love could conquer anything…that is until his weekend bag exploded all over our apartment.

The same holds true for exercise – how energized do you feel after taking a day or two (or three or four) off from the gym?  If you hit it too hard too many days in a row, eventually you’ll get sluggish and you just won’t be throwing down squat thrusts quite like you used to.

So, you see, every budget needs a teensy break every now and then.  Don’t get too excited.  I don’t mean you should trade in your beater for an Audi or your brown bag for a 5-star restaurant.

Keep it relative.  If you’re in massive amounts of debt, maybe a McDonald’s 59 cent ice cream cone will suffice.  If you’re debt free and on the fast track to financial freedom, maybe a new golf club or sweater will keep you in line.

Believe me, a little wiggle room will make your budget more successful.  Some of my recent splurges?  New sparkly tennis shoes and a nice dinner out with Lloyd.  These little breaks from my saving were just what I needed to keep me right on track.

What do you do to let you budget, relationship, life, etc. take a personal day?

Lloyd and I normally take a week long vacation every year.  I’m sure we’ll go somewhere next year as well, but today we were talking about saving some extra dough and going on 2 additional weekend trips to places we’ve never been.  That would make 3 vacations next year!  Yay!

I’m ashamed to admit that I never really thought much of Canada until I started blogging.  There are SO many Canadian bloggers!  You all have intrigued me and now I really wanna visit!  Canadians: where should I go, eh?  (Aw, my first “eh”.)

I’m a beach girl.  I’m one of those people that hates wasting vacation on places other than beaches….but I really wanna see places like NYC and Boston, so I guess I better suck it up for those places.

Where have I been?

  • Texas (everywhere – my family is all over that state)
  • Chicago
  • Los Angeles/San Diego
